 Medical Plan Updates: 7/18/2022

 UnitedHealthcare (UHC)

  • UHC provided updated information on COVID-19 booster shot eligibility for individuals aged 5 years and older.
    • Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), those who have completed the primary series of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine are eligible to get a booster shot of any of the authorized COVID-19 vaccines*, at least five months after completing the series. The Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 booster vaccines are still preferred over the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine for booster vaccination.

  • UHC advised members that children under five years of age are eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine. The CDC recommends the following vaccines:
    • Pfizer: Three doses for children six months to four years old. The second dose should be given three to eight weeks after the first dose, and the third dose should be given at least eight weeks after the second dose.
    • Moderna: Two doses for children six months to 17 years old. The second dose should be given one month after the first dose.
  • UHC reminded members of the protection the COVID-19 vaccines provide:
    • COVID-19 vaccines can take several weeks after vaccination completion for full effectiveness.
    • Fully vaccinated people may carry the virus after exposure, even if they are not showing symptoms.
    • The duration of protection against COVID-19 is still unknown and being studied.
